7 Most Toxic Expectations You Have of Men
We all have expectations of other people, including those of the opposite sex. However, some expectations can be unhealthy or toxic. As women, it's important we examine any prejudiced or unjust views we may hold towards men. Here are 7 common toxic expectations many women have had towards men.
1. Expecting Them to Read Our Minds
A big one is expecting men to be mind readers and know what upsets us without proper communication. We might get angry when a guy doesn't pick up on our subtle hints. The truth is, men aren't psychic! We need to clearly express our feelings and needs openly and directly.
2. Assuming Sex is All They Care About
Another toxic belief is that men only see women as sexual objects, not real people or companions. In reality, most men desire an emotional connection too. While physical intimacy is important to them, it's not all they want in a partner.
3. Believing Anger Always Leads to Violence
Some women fear male anger due to past experiences. So we expect any expression of anger means we're in danger because it will escalate to violence. However, for healthy men, feeling anger doesn't mean they will become abusive. We need to unlearn this expectation.
4. Doubting Their Ability to Commit
Because some men cheat, we may believe guys are incapable of loyalty and will eventually leave when someone "better" comes along. But many men do value commitment. Assuming all men will cheat leads to distrust in relationships.
5. Expecting Mind-Reading (Again!)
We might think men should "just know" our needs without asking. If they really cared, they'd do special things for us intuitively. News flash: they aren't mind readers! We need to clearly communicate our wants and wishes to our partners.
6. Assuming Immaturity
Some women expect men to be lazy, unmotivated, and avoid adult responsibilities. We assume all men are messy, don't clean up after themselves, and need women to parent them. However, many men are mature adults fully capable of handling work and domestic duties.
7. Believing Male Friendship is Impossible
Finally, a big myth is men and women can't be just friends. We may think every guy friend secretly wants sex or romance. But men are absolutely capable of platonic friendship with women without ulterior motives.
By examining our own unfair biases, we can move towards healthier attitudes. Let's keep an open mind and judge men as individuals, not make assumptions based on gender. What unrealistic expectations have you had towards men in the past? Share in the comments!
